Eight-percent of the U.S. adult and adolescent population struggles with some form of drug or alcohol addiction (Source: 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health).
Which means the percentage of people whose lives are negatively affected by a loved one with some form of substance addiction—i.e. an addict’s parents, spouse, siblings, friends, coworkers, etc.—is perhaps three to four times higher, or one out of every three to four people in our population.
These are the people Jon Sorenson calls loved ones of addicts—the people who “anguish in the shadows of the addicts they love.” Their struggle is with codependency, which leads them to display enabling, controlling, obsessive, and angry behaviors. Sadly, these behaviors can unwittingly prolong and exacerbate their loved one’s addiction.
Jon’s faith-based message, Stop Prolonging Your Loved One’s Addiction: How Your ‘Helping’ May Actually Be Hurting, is a timely and relevant presentation for any recovery group or men’s/women’s church ministry. Based on his recently published book by the same title, Jon draws on his 18-year journey as a Christian father of an alcoholic son, which was complicated further by his own battle with codependency.
